A Pet Parent's Guide to Pet Deals Worth Buying

By Mike TarantinoOctober 1, 20266 min read
Gazoobie card: 35% off the first bag works out to about 7% off the year. A $70 bag costs $50.00 on the first Autoship order and $66.50 on each order after it.

For a pet parent, most of the money goes on things you buy again and again: food, litter, treats, flea and tick meds. A deal on those is only as good as what the second order costs. On the things you buy once, like a crate or a cat tree, the deal is the day you buy, because those prices move.

On October 1, 2026, Gazoobie listed 615 pet deals from 18 stores, and since August we have recorded, once a day, the price of the ones that list a price. Here is what that shows about which pet deals save money.

What a first-order discount is worth over a year

Of those 615 deals, 43 were tied to a first order, a new customer, or signing up for repeat delivery. Chewy calls its program Autoship. Petco offers in our feed call it Repeat Delivery, and one calls it Autoship. The headline number is usually 35% to 50% off.

Read the terms before you count on it. Chewy's Autoship page says the first order gets "35% off your Autoship order, with a maximum discount of $20." After that, you "save an extra 5% on select brands for all future Autoship orders." So on any first order over $57.14, the 35% is really $20.

Here is a year of it. Say your dog eats one $70 bag a month. The first Autoship order costs $50. The next eleven cost $66.50 each, if the brand gets the 5%. That is $781.50 for the year against $840 at full price: $58.50 saved, or about 7%. If the brand is not in the 5% group, the year's saving is the $20 from the first order.

Petco's offers spell out the same shape. One in our feed reads "Save Up To 35% Off Your First Repeat Delivery Order & 5% Off Future Orders." Check the cap on any first-order offer, then price order two. The food offers on our pet deals page are mostly this kind.

When Autoship still makes sense

It is a fair deal on food your pet already eats and that you would buy at that store anyway: 5% off eligible items on every order, and you do not run out. Chewy says you can change the schedule, skip a shipment or cancel at any time.

Switching foods to get it is a poor trade. A first-order discount on a food your pet has never tried pays for one bag. Pick the food first, then look for the deal on it.

Set the delivery gap to how fast your pet really goes through a bag. Chewy notes that "it can take time to know how long a bag of food, litter, or other items will last," and an order that arrives early is money spent before you need to. For food and litter, compare the price per pound across bag sizes too. The bigger bag is not always the cheaper one per pound, so run the unit price.

Flea, tick and heartworm meds: a low price is a warning

With medicine, the lowest price is the one to question. The FDA tells pet owners to be careful when a website's prices "are much lower than your veterinarian's or other online pharmacies' prices," because "suspiciously cheap medicines may be unapproved knock-offs, from another country (sometimes with the label in a language other than English), or expired."

The FDA also says a pharmacy "can't sell you a prescription veterinary medicine without a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian." A site that skips that step is breaking the law. A real pharmacy asks for the prescription or contacts your vet.

So the savings worth taking are the honest ones: a first-order pharmacy code at a store that checks prescriptions, or a cheaper box of the exact product and weight band your vet chose. Buy the band your pet fits today. A growing puppy can move up a band before a big pack runs out. Our flea, tick and heartworm deals are filed in one section.

Crates, beds and cat trees: the price moves, so watch it

Things you buy once work the other way. There is no second order, so the only question is whether today's price is a low one, and for many of these products the answer changes week to week. Our price record started on August 7, 2026. Of the 280 pet products on our list that have one, 87 changed price: 61 ended below the first price we saw, and 23 ended above it.

One 47-inch dog crate that doubles as furniture shows how wide the swing can be. We first saw it at $189.99 on August 10. It rose to $235.99 on August 14, then to $343.99 from September 3 to 5, then sat at $286.99, and on September 25 it dropped to $188.99. That is a $155 difference on the same crate, twenty days apart. The store marked it on sale every day, at anywhere from 20% to 56% off.

Not every swing ends lower. A wall-mounted cat tree we first saw at $39.99 on August 10 has cost $59.99 since September 6, still marked 40% off.

If a crate, bed or cat tree can wait, check the price for a week or two before you buy, and judge the price, not the percentage. The crates and beds and cat trees on our pet deals page show the price from each store's latest feed.

How Gazoobie sorts pet deals for pet parents

Gazoobie's AI scores deals and tags the ones it scores with the shopper types they suit. Pet Parent is one of 12. On October 1, 2026, 379 of the 615 pet deals carried that tag. Some pet deals suit other types better, such as a cat tree for a gift giver or a dog house for someone who likes a yard project.

The Pet Parent deals page lists the ones tagged for you. We score offers from store feeds that update once a day. We do not test coupon codes, so check the total at checkout.

Questions people ask

Is Chewy Autoship worth it?

For food your pet already eats, usually yes. Chewy takes 35% off the first Autoship order, up to $20, then 5% off eligible items on every order after. On one $70 bag a month, if the brand gets the 5%, that comes to $58.50 a year, or about 7%. It is not worth switching foods just for the first-order discount.

Can I cancel Autoship after the first order?

Chewy's Autoship page says you can change, skip or cancel an Autoship at any time, from Manage Autoship in your account or by calling customer service. Read the current terms on the store's site before you sign up, since they can change.

Why are flea and tick meds so much cheaper on some websites?

The FDA warns that suspiciously cheap pet medicines may be unapproved knock-offs, from another country, or expired. It also says a website cannot legally sell a prescription veterinary medicine without a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian. A much lower price is a reason to check the pharmacy, not a reason to buy.

When is the best time to buy a dog crate or cat tree?

We cannot name a best month yet: our daily price record only started in August 2026. What it does show is that prices on these items move a lot. One dog crate ranged from $188.99 to $343.99 between August 10 and September 30, 2026. If you can wait, check the price for a week or two before buying.
