Bottom Line
No. Amazon says it does not offer price matching compensation. Its help page says Amazon compares its prices with those of competitors carrying the same item and aims for everyday low prices that meet or beat them. So you cannot ask Amazon to match another store's price. There is one narrow form of price protection: the Pre-order Price Guarantee. If you pre-order a qualifying item that shows the "Pre-order Price Guarantee" message on its product page, you pay the lowest price Amazon.com offered between your order and the end of release day for physical items, or until release for digital content. It covers only items sold by Amazon.com, not most other sellers on the site.
Follow-up questions
Will Amazon refund the difference if the price drops after I buy?
Amazon's pricing pages do not describe a price adjustment for items that are already released. The refund they do describe falls under the Pre-order Price Guarantee. If your pre-order enters shipping before the release date and the price drops before the end of release day, Amazon says it will automatically refund the difference to your credit or debit card within 48 hours. If you paid another way, Amazon says to contact it.
Which pre-orders qualify for the guarantee?
Only items that are not yet released and that show the offer message on their product detail page qualify. Items without the message do not qualify, whatever they are. The guarantee does not cover items already released, most offers from other sellers, or purchases on Amazon's other sites. Lower prices from programs you must join to get them do not count either.
Does everyone see the same price on Amazon?
Amazon says it offers all customers the same everyday low prices and does not use your personal information to charge you more. It also says it prices many grocery items regionally. It offers extra savings for Prime members, along with select customer discounts.
How can I track an Amazon price instead?
Amazon points to Alexa for Shopping, its AI shopping assistant. Amazon says the assistant will show up to a year of a product's price history and let you set price alerts. It can even complete a purchase at a price you choose.
What to do
If another store has the item for less, buy it there, because Amazon will not match. If you want to buy from Amazon, set a price alert in Alexa for Shopping and wait for the price you want.
